Assistant Professor of Medicine - Director, Mechanical Circulatory Support

Jonathan Grinstein, MD, FACC, is a highly respected cardiologist specializing in the medical management of advanced heart failure. Dr. Grinstein treats patients who require long-term IV medications or continuous infusion pump medications, mechanical circulatory support, such as left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), and heart transplantation. Along with his devotion to excellent clinical care, Dr. Grinstein is passionate about furthering medicine through research. Dr. Grinstein has evaluated and perfected echocardiographic and computed tomography techniques that noninvasively monitor the pressure and volume inside the heart for patients with an implanted LVAD. This technique allows cardiologists to analyze how well a patient is responding to the device and make necessary adjustments in real time. Additionally, Dr. Grinstein is conducting research to develop a “smart” LVAD that can intuitively adjust its speed based on the physiological needs of the patient. He is also using computational fluid dynamics to study and predict blood flow patterns through the LVAD to maximize device performance. Dr. Grinstein’s research has been published in several high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Cardiac Failure, American Society for Artificial Internal Organs Journal, Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging.
